چکیده

The effect of the food/microorganisms (F/M) ratio and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) on the microbial activity has been examined. One of the SBRs was fed with synthetic wastewater containing inorganic carbon compounds (COD/N ratio 0.7 g COD/g N). To the other SBR, both inorganic and organic carbon was supplied leading to 6.9 g COD/g N. The F/M ratios in the reactors were 0.02 and 0.065 g COD/g cell COD, respectively. Under the above feeding conditions, two experimental series were carried out at DO concentration of 0.5 and 1.5 mg O2/dm. The activity of the biomass was determined through respirometric tests based on the determination of oxygen uptake rate (OUR). Independently on operational parameters, nitrification was the process consuming the highest amount of oxygen. Both at the F/M ratio of 0.02 and 0.065 g COD/g cell COD, higher DO concentration resulted in increased carbonaceous and endogenous respiration.

Application of a Hybrid Respirometric Technique to the Characterization of an Industrial Wastewater

Two respirometric principles are combined in an experimental setup based on a laboratory scale batch reactor and applied to the characterization of activated sludge and wastewater. In the first respirometric principle the temporary disturbance of the dissolved oxygen concentration in the reactor is used to estimate the respiration rate. To this end, the oxygen mass-transfer must be calculated a...

Settling Properties of Activated Sludge from a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)

The purpose of this work was to examine the settling properties of activated sludge from a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The experiments were carried out in a bench-scale reactor, fed with wastewater from the University of Olsztyn treatment plant. Concentrations of the examined activated sludge varied between 2.5 and 6.0 kg SS m. Laboratory analyses of the sludge comprised: sludge concentrati...

Application of biosensors in wastewater treatment

“Biosensors” are defined as sensors that allow the measurement and interpretation of the biological response of activated sludge to a known disturbance. The purpose of “biosensing” the activated sludge, on-line at the full-scale plant or off-line in lab-scale tests, is to obtain specific information about one or several activated sludge processes. This information can serve as plant performance...

Nonlinear fuzzy Control System for dissolved oxygen with aeration System in sequencing batch reactor

Biological processes at a wastewater treatment plant are complex, multivariable, time varying and nonlinear. Moreover, interactions between the components are very strong. Control of dissolved oxygen is one of most important task at the plant. The level of dissolved oxygen in aerobic tanks has significant influence on behaviour and activity of microorganisms at the plant. Air for aerated tanks ...

The study of neural network-based controller for controlling dissolved oxygen concentration in a sequencing batch reactor.

The design and development of the neural network (NN)-based controller performance for the activated sludge process in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is presented in this paper. Here we give a comparative study of various neural network (NN)-based controllers such as the direct inverse control, internal model control (IMC) and hybrid NN control strategies to maintain the dissolved oxygen (DO) l...
